history

Evangelical community center in the middle of the Johannesberg.

Via the Johannesberg, the Altstrasse led "through the short Hessen" to Hersfeld. This will have been one of the reasons for the Hersfeld abbot Arnold to build a provost house here between 1021 and 1024. He consecrated the monastery of John the Baptist , after which the mountain, the district and the Protestant church were named.

Until well into the 20th century, there were only a few buildings in what is now the area of the district. These were the farm buildings of the landgrave's domain Johannesberg (former provost's office) on the Johannesberg and the houses of the domain Bingartes at the foot of the mountain. Both domains and their area were incorporated into Hersfeld in 1928.

Today's Johannesberg district was not built as a new development area until 1967. The Protestant community center Johanneskirche with kindergarten was built in 1977 and expanded in 1995 to include a church service room , and the Catholic Church of St. Wigbert followed in 1981. Both churches are connected by the “Platz der Treffen”, on which every two years in close proximity to St. John's Day (June 24th) the ecumenical festival of St. John is celebrated.
