The Johanneskirche is a Roman Catholic branch church in Imst in Tyrol . It is consecrated to Saint John the Baptist and John the Evangelist . The church, which is essentially Gothic , has been renovated several times and is a listed building .

history

The church was first mentioned in 1274 when it was largely destroyed by a rock fall. It was probably related to the hospital . The Gothic church, built around 1467, was converted to Baroque style in the 18th century and painted by Philipp Jakob Greil , only the Gothic choir remained. The church was badly damaged in the big fire in 1822 and was then used as a wood storage area. After it was rebuilt, it was consecrated in 1831. From 1879 to 1883 the facade was changed to historicize it . The interior was provided with paintings and decorations by Max Gehri and Thomas Konrad based on designs by Felix Schatz . From 1954 to 1956 the church was restored again and received its current appearance.

Entrance facade

The north-facing single-nave aisle church consists of a three-bay nave with a large arched window and a strongly recessed polygonal choir . To the east of the choir is the tower, the onion helmet with lantern was put on after 1822. The bell storey has arched twin windows one above the other . To the west of the choir is the sacristy , adjoining it is a chapel niche with a picture of Christ on the Mount of Olives .

On the facade, which was historically modified in 1879/1883, there is a circular window with quatrefoil tracery , underneath the portal with stone pillars. The mosaic in the tympanum depicts God the Father with the tablets of the law and was created in 1976 by Andreas Weißenbach . The decorative surfaces sunk into the facade were painted in 1976/1978 by Elmar Kopp . On the left they show the evangelist John with the lamb from the Apocalypse , on the right the baptism of Christ in the Jordan by John the Baptist and in the gable Mary with the child.

Interior

The interior is vaulted by a shallow barrel with stitch caps above the windows. The stuccoing of the vault shows the dove of St. Spirit in a halo surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists, it was created in 1954/1956 by Franz Roilo . The anteroom is separated by a wrought iron grille, and above it is the two-storey organ gallery.

The glass windows in the choir were made by Fred Hochschwarzer in 1954 and show scenes from the life of Christ and John the Baptist. The small round window in the main choir has an abstract design. The popular altar , the ambo in the form of ears of corn, and the tabernacle were designed by Elmar Kopp in 1977.

The side altars on the choir arch date from the 17th century. The Michael's altar on the left shows a carved figure of the Archangel Michael fighting the devil, the figures on the side represent the hll. Georg and Helena . The altar was created by Hans Patsch around 1630 and originally stood in the Michael’s chapel in the cemetery. The right side altar from around 1670 comes from Klamm Castle . The altarpiece from the 18th century shows Mary with the child and the fourteen helpers .
