The Johanniterkommende Zum Heiligen Grab was a commander of the Order of St. John in Goslar , which existed from the 13th to the 16th century. Of the buildings that were destroyed in the Goslar riots in 1527 , only minor remains on the street Am Heiligen Grabe have survived .

history

The monastery was first mentioned in 1214. The property was north-west outside the city fortifications in front of the Vititor. The patronage of the burial and resurrection place of Jesus reminds of the origin of the order in Jerusalem and at the same time means a visualization of this pilgrimage destination, which was unattainable for most of the time. The monastery church accordingly comprised a central building as a replica of the holy grave . According to the order of the order, a hospital belonged to the monastery complex, which stretched east to today's post office .

Even before the Reformation , the buildings were dilapidated and there were negotiations with the city council about a move of the coming. A partial demolition took place in 1508.

Grave slab of Prior Johannes Engel (1515)

Given the threat of Goslar through . Henry II of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in 1527, the Council of defense strategic considerations in addition to the left George - and the Peter pin and the St. John's Church and the Holy grave Monastery erode. The Johanniter initially stayed in the monastery of the troll monks , before the convent was dissolved in the course of the Reformation.

After the remains of the foundations were overgrown and buried over the centuries, they were rediscovered during the expansion of the city during the imperial era and partially exposed and conserved. The grave slab of Johannes Engel († 1515), one of the last priors , was also found; it is now in the imperial palace .
