John Ericson

John Ericson , actually Joseph Meibes , (born September 23, 1926 in Düsseldorf , German Empire ; † May 3, 2020 in Santa Fe , New Mexico ) was an American actor .

Life

Joseph Meibes was the son of Karl Friedrich (Carl Frederick; Carl F.) Meibes, a food chemist from Düsseldorf. His mother was Ellen (Wilson) Meibes, a former Shakespearean actress and opera singer.

In 1931 the family emigrated to Antwerp and in 1934 to the USA. He attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and then worked as a stage actor, including on Broadway in the original production of the play Stalag 17, later filmed by Billy Wilder .

Ericson made his much-acclaimed film debut alongside Pier Angeli in Teresa in 1951 . There he convinced with a remarkable acting performance as the decisive and fearful ex-GI Philip Cass . This was followed by roles alongside world stars such as Spencer Tracy , Elizabeth Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck . Nevertheless, Ericson was never able to get into the top ranks of Hollywood stars. The elegant-looking Ericson often played self-confident and tough men, he was very often seen in westerns . In the Disney comedy The Daring Witch in Her Flying Bed he played the role of the German officer Heller. In addition to his cinema work, Ericson has appeared in numerous television series, including Airwolf , Murder Is Her Hobby , General Hospital , Knight Rider , Smoking Colts , Bonanza and The A-Team . In the series private detective Honey West , he played the male lead between 1965 and 1966 on the side of Anne Francis . He made his last of over 100 film and television appearances in 2008 in the series LA Crash .

The actor has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1501 Vine Street). John Ericson was married to the actress Karen Ericson (* 1938) for the second time since 1974 . He was the father of two children. He died in May 2020 at the age of 93 from pneumonia .
