John Pritchard (Bishop)
John Lawrence Pritchard (born April 22, 1948 in Salford ) is a British Anglican theologian and was Bishop of Oxford in the Church of England from 2007 to 2014 .
Life
Pritchard was born the son of a clergyman ; a church career in his family was not initially intended for him. He attended Arnold School in Blackpool and studied law at St Peter's College of Oxford University . During the summer holidays he worked as a tram conductor in Blackpool. After completing his first degree in law, he then studied theology at Oxford .
In preparation for the priesthood he attended Ridley Hall College at the University of Cambridge , where he received a degree in pastoral theology . In 1972 he was ordained a clergyman . From 1972 to 1976 he was parish vicar ( Curate ) in the parish of St Martin's in the Bullring in Birmingham . In 1976 he was chaplain, youth counselor and deputy head for the area of religious education ( Assistant Director of Religious Education ) in the diocese of Bath and Wells . In 1980 he became pastor ( vicar ) of Wilton in the parish of Taunton ; he held this church office until 1988. In 1988 he was Pastoral Director ( Director of Pastoral Studies ) at Cranmer Hall Anglican Theological College , the seminary of St John's College of the University of Durham ; from 1993 to 1996 he was the head of the seminar there ( Warden ). During his time at the University of Durham, Pritchard received a Masters of Letters in pastoral theology. From 1996 to 2001 he was Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) and Residenzkanoniker ( Canon residentiary ) at Canterbury Cathedral .
In July 2001, his calling as suffragan bishop was announced by Jarrow . He was ordained a bishop in January 2002. In December 2006 he was called to be Bishop of Oxford . On June 8, 2007, he was officially inaugurated at Oxford Cathedral . He is the 42nd Bishop of Oxford .
In 2008, as Bishop of Oxford, Pritchard supported the desire of Muslim believers to have the Adhān broadcast over loudspeakers from the minaret of the main mosque ( Central Mosque ) in Oxford. Pritchard then received several death threats from conservative Christian circles, which, among other things , demanded his beheading .
Pritchard exercised several other church duties and honorary offices. From 1999 to 2001 he was a member of the General Synod of the Church of England; since 2007 he has been a member again. He has been a board member of the Church Army evangelistic organization since 2005 . Since 2005 he has been president of the Guild of Health . Since 2008 he has been a member of the Ministry Division of the Church of England. Since 2009 he is the trustee ( Trustee ) of the Christian Missions Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK).
He has been an Honorary Fellow of St Peter's College, Oxford University since 2007 .
On October 31, 2014, he resigned as Bishop of Oxford.
Membership in the House of Lords
Pritchard was a Spiritual Lord in the House of Lords from 2010 to 2014 . Its official launch took place on November 25, 2010. He was assisted by Martin Wharton , Bishop of Newcastle and John Saxbee , Bishop of Lincoln . He succeeds David Stancliffe , who was Bishop of Salisbury until 2010 , in the House of Lords .
Private
Pritchard is married and has two daughters. His wife, Wendy, worked as a math teacher for many years , most recently as a learning support assistant at the Venerable Bede School in Sunderland . His hobbies include hiking , photography , reading , book writing, traveling , music and cricket .
