Pecker ( Pecker ) is an American comedy film of John Waters from the year 1998 .

action

Pecker, an 18-year-old boy from Baltimore , is a passionate amateur photographer. He photographs the everyday life of his working-class family, such as his little sister, who is addicted to sweets, or his older sister, who works in a gay strip club. At his first exhibition in a café, the gallery owner Rorey Wheeler from New York City , who happens to be in town, discovers his photos and is enthusiastic about them. She exhibits his pictures in her gallery in New York and Pecker becomes a celebrated artist, the media often report about him. His grandmother, who spends most of her time with a "talking" statue of Mary , criticizes that the pictures are not good. The photos are to be exhibited in a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

Wheeler wants to sleep with Pecker, he agrees. His friend Shelley is watching the scene through the window. She takes a picture and runs away. Pecker runs after her, but stops and takes a picture of the fleeing Shelley.

Pecker and Shelley make up on election day, they have sex in the voting booth. Pecker cancels the exhibition in New York organized by Wheeler; instead he is holding an exhibition in Baltimore. Visitors come from New York by bus. The exhibition turns into a boisterous party during which some people dance half-naked.

Pecker is asked what he's up to next. He says he wants to direct a movie.

Reviews

Roger Ebert described some film characters in the Chicago Sun-Times of September 25, 1998 and stated that Pecker was still the most normal of his family. The portrayal of Edward Furlong is neither “charismatic” nor “fervent”, Christina Ricci seems “discouraged”. The film would be better if Ricci played the photographer. Some scenes and gags are "flat". Ebert mentioned numerous cameo appearances .

The lexicon of international films described the comedy as "sometimes shrill", the portrayal of the "talented" Edward Furlong as "refreshingly naive".

John Waters was nominated for the Grand Prix Asturias of the Gijón International Film Festival in 1998 . Christina Ricci won the Florida Film Critics Circle Award in 1999 .
