Jonathan Coleman (born March 9, 1975 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach , who was last under contract with HC Eppan Pirates in the Italian A2 series until 2012 .

Career

Jon Coleman began his career as a hockey player in the team at Boston University , which he was active parallel to his studies from 1993 to 1997 in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . With his team he won the Hockey East championship in 1994 and 1995 . He also became NCAA champions in 1995 with Boston University. As a high school player, the defender was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft as the 48th player . For the Detroit farm team , the Adirondack Red Wings , he played from 1997 to 1999 in the American Hockey League . During this period he also worked for the Detroit Vipers from the International Hockey League . The 1999/2000 season he spent with the Kentucky Thoroughblades from the AHL, before he began the following season with their league rivals Providence Bruins and they ended with the Orlando Solar Bears from the IHL. He won the 2001 Turner Cup with the Solar Bears .

For the 2001/02 season Coleman went to Europe for the first time, where he was active for Amur Khabarovsk in the Russian Super League . In the following season he was under contract for the Vienna Capitals in the Austrian ice hockey league , before he tried again in North America in the 2003/04 season and played for the Worcester IceCats in the AHL for a season. The former junior national player began the 2004/05 season at HC Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss National League A , but left the club after only two games and spent the entire remaining season with the Kölner Haien in the German Ice Hockey League . For the Haie he scored one goal in 43 games and gave four assists.

In the 2005/06 season Coleman rose with the Malmö Redhawks from HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division, in the Elitserien , in which he did not play afterwards, but for HC Bozen in the 2006/07 season in the Italian Serie A1 . He started the 2007/08 season in Austria, where he had previously played for the Vienna Capitals. During this season he spent much of the time at EC Graz 99ers before finishing them with the Nottingham Panthers in the British Elite Ice Hockey League . In this he was also in the 2008/09 season on the ice, but for Nottingham's league rivals Coventry Blaze . In the summer of 2009, the American signed a contract with HC Eppan Pirates in Serie A2 , the second Italian division, and immediately became second division champions with his team in the 2009/10 season. In June 2012 his contract with HC Eppan was terminated.

After his career as an active player, Coleman was hired as assistant coach of the ice hockey team at Babson College for the 2015/16 season . For the 2018/19 season he moved to the Bentley University team in the same position .

International

For the USA Coleman took part in the U20 World Junior Championship in 1994 . In this he remained pointless in seven games and received two penalty minutes.
