Jorge María Cardinal Mejía (born January 31, 1923 in Buenos Aires , Argentina , † December 9, 2014 in Rome ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Jorge María Mejía studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Seminary of Villa Devoto and received the sacrament of ordination in 1945 . After further studies in Rome , he was at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas for Doctor of theology doctorate . At the Pontifical Biblical Institute he completed a degree in Biblical Theology and from 1962 to 1963 postgraduate studies at the Jerusalem Biblical Institute.

He was Professor of Exegesis of the Old Testament at the Catholic University of Buenos Aires . He was also a professor of Biblical Greek, Hebrew, and archeology at the same faculty. He was Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Instituto de Cultura Religiosa Superior and the Marist Institute in Argentina. He was also visiting professor at the Ecumenical Institute for Theological Studies Tantur in Israel. He was the editor of a Catholic magazine and an observer at the Second Vatican Council . In 1966 he was appointed director of the Ecumenical Commission of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires; From 1967 to 1977 he was secretary at the Latin American Office for Ecumenical Issues at CELAM . From 196 * to 1972 he was chairman of the committee and board member of the World Catholic Association for Bible Pastoral Care. As the successor to Gustavo Franceschi , he was director of the Catholic magazine "Criterio" from 1956 to 1977.

In 1977 he became secretary of the Commission on Relations between the Holy See and the Jews . On September 20, 1979, he was appointed chaplain to His Holiness by Pope John Paul II .

On March 8, 1986, Pope John Paul II appointed him Vice-President of the Pontifical Commission Iustitia et Pax and Titular Bishop of Apollonia . On April 12, 1986, he received by Roger Cardinal Etchegaray , the episcopal ordination . Co-consecrators were the Curia Bishops Eduardo Martínez Somalo and Antonio María Javierre Ortas SDB .

On March 5, 1994, Mejía was appointed secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and at the same time, while retaining his titular seat, was raised pro hac vice to archbishop. Five days later he was also appointed secretary to the college of cardinals . On March 7, 1998, he was appointed archivist and librarian of the Holy Roman Church . He was also an advisor to the Pontifical Council for the Laity and the Commission for Religious Relations with Judaism and a member of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants .

On February 21, 2001 Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Girolamo della Carità in the college of cardinals.

On November 24, 2004, John Paul II Mejías accepted his resignation due to reasons of age. He did not take part in the 2005 and 2013 conclaves because he had exceeded the age limit .

On 21 February 2011 he was maintaining its pro hac vice to the titular church declared Title Diakonie to Cardinal priests charged.

On March 12, 2013, he suffered a heart attack and was taken to a Roman hospital. Cardinal Mejía lay there until his death in December 2014.
