José Luis Mollaghan (born May 2, 1946 in Buenos Aires ) is Archbishop of the Curia in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith .

Life

José Luis Mollaghan attended the Minor Seminary and studied philosophy and theology at the Immaculate Conception seminary of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires . In 1967 he went to Rome and studied theology and canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he was also awarded a Dr. iur. can. received his doctorate . He received on 19 March 1971 in Rome by the prefect of the Papal Household , Jacques-Paul Cardinal Martin , the ordination .

In the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires he was involved as a youth chaplain in Catholic Action and as a national advisor to the Mothers League. After pastoral work in the parishes of Santa Ana, San José de Flores and Nuestra Señora del Socorro, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Juan Carlos Cardinal Aramburu , appointed him first pastor of the parish of Madre Admirable . In addition, from 1975 he held a professorship for canon law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina .

Pope John Paul II appointed him on July 22, 1993 titular bishop of Theuzi and auxiliary bishop in Buenos Aires. He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Antonio Cardinal Quarracino , on October 2, 1993 in the Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires ; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Ubaldo Calabresi , Apostolic Nuncio in Argentina , and Eduardo Vicente Mirás , Archbishop Emeritus of Rosario.

José Luis Mollaghan was among other secretary of the diocesan priest council and member of the consultors College and judge at the Court of Appeal. He was vicar general as well as vicar for the economy and moderator of the metropolitan curia. In the Argentine Bishops' Conference he was secretary general from 1993 to 1999 and a member of the Commission for Territorial Organization and the Council of the Legal Department and Economy. As a member of the Board of Directors and the Standing Committee, he was a delegate of the Latin American Bishops' Council (CELAM) .

On May 17, 2000, he was appointed Bishop of San Miguel by Pope John Paul II , and on August 5, 2000, he was appointed to the office. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on December 22, 2005 Archbishop of Rosario . The ceremonial inauguration ( enthronement ) took place on March 18, 2006.

Pope Francis appointed him as a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on May 19, 2014 and made him head of the newly established Appeals Commission for decisions in the event of serious misconduct ( delicta graviora ) by priests, the decision of which is reserved for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In 2018, Archbishop Charles Scicluna took over the leadership of the Appeals Committee. On July 29, 2019, the Pope appointed him deputy member of the same appointment committee.
