Balduin Sulzer
Balduin Sulzer OCist (* as Josef Sulzer on March 15, 1932 in Großraming , Upper Austria ; † April 10, 2019 in Linz , Upper Austria) was an Austrian Roman Catholic religious priest . He became known as a music teacher and composer .
Life
At the age of ten, Sulzer came to Linz , where he attended high school. He sang as an altar boy in the Linz Cathedral in the "Domschola" under the direction of Cathedral Kapellmeister Josef Kronsteiner . After graduation he joined in 1949 the Congregation of the Cistercians in Wilhering and received the religious name Baldwin . He began his philosophical and theological studies in Linz and Rome as well as studying history at the University of Vienna . He completed a musical education at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz, at the Pontifical Institute for Church Music in Rome and at the Vienna University of Music , among others with Hans Gillesberger .
In 1955 Balduin Sulzer was ordained a priest . From 1959 to 1977 he was a music teacher at the Wilhering Abbey High School , where he directed the Wilhering Boys' Choir and the Wilhering Cantorei. From 1974 to 1997 Sulzer was a music professor at the Linz Music High School . He was also a répétiteur at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz and cathedral music director . Franz Welser-Möst studied composition with Sulzer, the tenor Kurt Azesberger and the soprano Anna Maria Pammer were also his students. Sulzer was the founder and musical director of the Linz Music High School, where he stayed from 1974 until his retirement in 1997.
Balduin Sulzer lived and worked in Wilhering , where he also called pen conductor worked.
Works
Sulzer's oeuvre comprises over 400 works, including four operas, children's musicals, nine symphonies, a passion, twelve instrumental concerts , piano and chamber music as well as songs and choral music.
