Joseph Karl Johann Hesse Edler von Hessenthal (born March 8, 1785 in Welmschloß , † July 25, 1849 in Bad Ems ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Joseph was the son of Thadäus Hesse von Hessenthal and his wife Johanna, born von Newalther († around 1820). His father was a councilor and state accountant for the Kingdom of Bohemia and on January 12, 1805, he received the hereditary-Austrian nobility as nobleman von Hessenthal.

Military career

Hesselthal received his school education in Komotau and Prague . In 1800 he volunteered for an Austrian volunteer corps in Prague. In 1801 he came to Vienna and became a cadet in the engineering academy. There he advanced to lieutenant in early November 1805 and still fought in the Third Coalition War . In 1807 he joined the mine corps as a staff captain. In the Fifth Coalition War , Hessenthal was wounded by shrapnel off Komotau. After the war he said goodbye on January 17, 1811 and devoted himself to agriculture.

With the beginning of the wars of liberation , Hessenthal entered Prussian service and on April 22, 1813 was employed as a second lieutenant in the engineering corps . He then took part in the blockade of Glogau , was appointed prime lieutenant at the beginning of January 1814 and on March 2, 1814 head of a pioneer company.

After the war, Hessenthal was promoted to Captain II class on April 24, 1816, was promoted to Captain I class in the 2nd Engineer Brigade on August 25, 1818 and was appointed commander of the 3rd Engineer Division on August 10, 1821 . In this position he advanced to major at the end of June 1829 . On April 29, 1831, Hessenthal became the commander of the Guard Pioneer Battalion and a member of the examination committee for engineer captains II class. In 1835 he received the Order of St. Stanislaus III. Class and the Commander's Cross of the Order of St. Mauritius and Lazarus .

On April 18, 1837, he was commissioned to take on the business of the 1st Pioneer Inspection and on January 14, 1838, Hessenthal was appointed inspector. But on March 24, 1838, he came to the first fortress inspection in the same position. On March 30, 1840 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on October 30, 1841, Hessenthal was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III. Excellent with a bow. As a colonel , he was appointed inspector of the 2nd Pioneer Inspection on May 12, 1842, and in the following year he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Saxon Order of Civil Merit . On February 26, 1846, the 2nd Engineer Inspection was entrusted with the conduct of business and on October 5, 1846 was appointed inspector. Granted the character of major general, Hessenthal was put up for disposal on March 3, 1848 with a pension . He died on July 25, 1849 in Bad Ems and was buried there on July 27, 1849.

Hessenthal married Auguste Amalie von Blumenthal (1775-1853) on January 16, 1815 in Neisse . Her sister Friederike Wilhelmine Luise was married to Lieutenant General Christoph August Gustav Wilhelm von Sack . From his marriage a daughter and the future forester Robert Julius Karl (1815-1897) emerged, who married Ida Luise Christiane Morgenstern (1824-1850).
