He then worked in the forest sector. In 1821 he found employment as a forestry assistant in Rieneck and in 1822 as a forestry actuary in Winnweiler , before he passed the state examination for higher forest service in 1823 with distinction. In 1826 the forest office actuary came to Kirchheimbolanden . On January 1, 1830, he followed his father as a district forester in Langenprozelten, but was transferred to Rothenbuch in the same position in 1832 . In 1835 he was promoted to forestry commissioner at the royal district government in Würzburg , before he became forester in Sailauf in 1841 .

Mantel had proven himself to such an extent that he could be accepted into the higher forest service. In 1842 he joined the government of Lower Franconia as a government and district forestry council. On October 1, 1851, he was appointed to the Oberforstrat in the Bavarian Ministry of Finance in Munich and finally appointed Ministerialrat in 1858 , which entrusted him with the management of the entire Bavarian forestry sector.

Mantel made many contributions to Bavarian forestry. He introduced new economic rules and improved both the material situation of forest personnel and their training.
