Josip Horvat Međimurec
Josip Horvat Međimurec (born February 18, 1904 in Čakovec , † June 2, 1945 in Zagreb ) was a Yugoslavian painter , graphic artist and illustrator who is one of the representatives of Croatian historicism .
Life
Međimurec attended elementary school in his native Čakovec , then the grammar schools in Nagykanizsa and Pest and studied at the Vienna Art Academy with Karl Kohn and Robert Fuchs.
He began his work in Zagreb in 1924, supported by his patron, the gallery owner Antun Ullrich, and worked there until his death, shortly after the Second World War. He was charged with cooperating with the authorities of the Independent State of Croatia and executed by the Yugoslav partisans without trial. The place of his burial is unknown.

Horvat's work depicts topics primarily from the history of Croatia . He portrayed the battle of Sissek , the coronation of Tomislav and the deaths of Nikola Šubić Zrinski and Petar Svačić .
He also painted portraits of Croatian celebrities, e. B. by Zdeslav , Juraj Zrinski and Grgo Martić , but also by his contemporaries (Antun Ulrich, Zdenko Turković Kutjevski). He also illustrated the novels by Marija Jurić Zagorka ("Grička vještica"), which were published in the form of booklets in the Jutarnji list .
His Signatures ( ink and pencil ; 1936-1938) show Croatian celebrities ( Stjepan Radic , Andrija Kacic Miošić , Marko Marulić , Fran Krsto Frankopan , Matija Gubec , Ljudevit Gaj , Josip Jelačić , Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski , Franjo Rački , Vladko Maček , Eugen Kvaternik , Matija Antun Relković , Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević , August Šenoa , Ante Starčević and others) and sights and monuments ( Cathedral of Trogir , Baska tablet , Zagreb Cathedral , Cathedral of St. James (Sibenik) , etc.). The National and University Library of Zagreb owns 56 of his drawings.
There were several exhibitions of his works in the Zagreb Art Pavilion (1928 and 1942–1944), which Antun Bauer has described.
