Joyce El Khoury

Joyce El-Khoury  (* 1981 or 1982 in Beirut ) is a Lebanese - Canadian opera singer ( soprano ).

Youth and education

El-Khoury was born in Beirut , Lebanon, to Jean and Alex El-Khoury. She has two sisters, Cynthia El-Khoury Najm and Krista Jane El-Khoury, the latter also a singer. El-Khoury came to Canada with her family at the age of six, lived in Ottawa , Ontario, and began taking private singing lessons with Karen Spicer at the age of 15. On the advice of her teacher and her parents, she studied singing at the  University of Ottawa  with Ingemar Korjus. During the last two years of her studies she took part in the Young Artists Program of Opera Lyra in Ottawa and made her operatic debut as Giovanna in Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto . After graduating in 2005 with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Ottawa, she studied at the Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) in Philadelphia with Bill Schuman. El-Khoury was invited to participate in the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera  and study with James Levine while she continued her studies with Schuman. Her musical mentor and singing teacher is Laurent Philippe, with whom she performs regularly.

Career

Joyce El-Khoury made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2009 as one of the Nuns in Suor Angelica by Giacomo Puccini . In the summer of 2010, El-Khoury was hired by Lorin Maazel  and the Castleton Festival  to sing Lauretta in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi . On the opening evening of the festival, she was asked to take on the title role of Suor Angelica. This was the beginning of Lorin Maazel's mentorship. She played Rosina in Rossini 's Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Beijing , the Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème and her first Desdemona in Verdi 's  Otello  , conducted by Maazel.

She now appears in leading opera houses and with symphony orchestras around the world, including the Royal Opera House , the Bavarian State Opera , the Nederlandse Opera , the Santa Fe Opera , the Seattle Opera , the Vancouver Opera , the Welsh National Opera , the Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Glyndebourne Festival .

El-Khoury's commitment to contemporary opera include the title role of Tobias Picker 's Emmeline for the Opera Theater of Saint Louis and Tatyana Bakst in Jake Heggie's opera Great Scott for the San Diego Opera.
