József Farkas

József Farkas (born March 17, 1952 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian wrestler . He was a multiple medalist at European Championships and an Olympian in the Greco-Roman style in heavyweight.

Life

József Farkas began wrestling as a teenager in Budapest. After initial successes, he became a member of the renowned sports club Vasas SC Budapest . He focused entirely on the Greco-Roman style. As an adult, he was 1.92 meters tall and weighed around 100 kg and mostly started in the heavyweight division, but for team tactical reasons he also started a few times in the super heavyweight division (class over 100 kg body weight), although he was actually too light for that.

In 1972 he was in Hvar / Yugoslavia in the weight class up to 87 kg body weight junior European champion ahead of Roman Codreanu from Romania , who grew into a super heavyweight of approx. 150 kg body weight in his later career.

In 1974 he was then used for the first time at the world championship in Katowice with the seniors at an international championship. He replaced the former world champion Ferenc Kiss , who was now " getting on in years". Jozsef Farkas had to realize in Katowice that other wrestlers still dictate the action among the seniors. He won there against Markku Virtanen from Finland , but then lost to Nikolai Balboschin from the USSR and against Kamen Losanow Goranow from Bulgaria , who were certainly the two best wrestlers in the world in the Greco-Roman heavyweight class in those years. Jozsef Farkas landed on the 8th place.

He won his first medal at the next international championship, the 1975 European championship in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . He defeated it in heavyweight u. a. Tore Hem from Norway , Christo Ignatow from Bulgaria and Nicolae Martinescu from Romania , the 1972 Olympic champion . He lost to Nikolai Balboschin and Fredi Albrecht from the GDR . But he won an EM bronze medal . At the 1975 World Cup in Minsk , after two victories against lighter opponents and defeats against Andrzej Skrzydlewski from Poland and Fredi Albrecht after the 4th round, he finished off, which meant 6th place.

In the 1976 Olympic year, József Farkas was initially very successful at the European Championships in Saint Petersburg . With victories over Caj Malmberg from Finland , Refik Memišević from Yugoslavia and Andrzej Skrzydlewski and a draw against Tore Hem after defeats against Nikolai Balboschin and Kamen Losanow Goranow, he took an excellent second place. a. also came about because Nikolai Balboschin retired early due to injury. At the Olympic Games in Montreal , however, he only managed one victory over the Senegalese Robert Ndiaye in the heavyweight division. Defeats to Fredi Albrecht and Nikolai Balboschin threw him out of the competition after the third round. He finally took 7th place.

1977 József Farkas missed a medal at the European Championships in Bursa with a 4th place in the heavyweight division. He won there u. a. against Heinz Schäfer from the FRG and lost again against Nikolai Balboschin. He gambled away the medal in the fight against the Bulgarian Georgi Rajkow , because he was disqualified with him because of passivity. At the world championship this year in Gothenburg he lost to the Swedish ex-world champion Per Svensson and surprisingly against the American Jeff Simons and only came in 10th place.

At the 1978 European Championships in Oslo, two heavyweight wins against Hans-Günter Klein from Germany and Tore Hem were enough to win another bronze medal, while he was able to defeat Hans-Günter Klein again at the 1978 World Cup in Mexico City Nikolai Balboschin and the Bulgarian Georgi Rajkow lost and thus came in 6th place.

Since József Farkas was ousted as the best Hungarian wrestler in the heavyweight division by Tamás Gáspár in Hungary in 1979 , he had to compete in the super heavyweight division at the 1979 World Championships in San Diego and at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , although he had something for it more than 100 kg body weight was actually too light. At the 1980 European Championships in Prievidza , where Tamás Gáspár paused, he was again in the heavyweight division and won another bronze medal with victories over Oldřich Dvořák from Czechoslovakia and Hans-Günter Klein . In San Diego and Moscow he landed on the ungrateful 4th place and narrowly missed the medal ranks both times. At both events he was only beaten by the multiple world champions Alexandar Tomow from Bulgaria and Oleksandr Kolchynskyj from the USSR.
