Julian Ignacy Nowak (born March 10, 1865 in Okocim , Galicia , † November 10, 1946 in Krakow ) was a Polish bacteriologist , politician and Prime Minister .

Life

Studies and professional career

After studying biology and later his habilitation , he was appointed professor at the Department of Biology at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow in 1899 . From 1921 to 1922 he was rector of the Jagiellonian University. In 1931 he also became a member of the Academy of Learning ( Polska Akademia Umiejętności ). In addition to an atlas of microbiology ( Atlas Mikrobiologiczny ) he was also the author of specialist books on bacteriology .

In 1903 he became a member of the Agricultural Society of Krakow ( Krakowskie Towarzystwo Rolne ), of which he was vice-president from 1921 to 1927.

Political career and Prime Minister 1922

Between 1907 and 1918 he was a member of the Stronnictwo Prawicy Narodowej party .

On July 31, 1922, he succeeded Artur Śliwiński as Prime Minister of Poland . However, he only held this office until December 16, 1922 and was then replaced as Prime Minister by Władysław Sikorski . From July 31 to August 21, 1922, he was also Minister for Religion and Public Education.

In 1922 he was elected Senator , where he was a member of the Committee on Religion and Public Education until 1927. Despite his contacts to conservative circles in Krakow, he also had sympathy for the party of small farmers ( Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe "Piast" ) during this time .
