Julio Abbadie , full name Julio César Abbadie Gismero , (born September 7, 1930 in San Ramón , † July 16, 2014 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan football player and coach.

Player career

Abbadie was born in San Ramón in 1930, the son of a French Basque who settled in Pan de Azúcar in the 1940s to open a bakery. The right winger called "el Pardo" began his career at Peñarol Montevideo , where he was already active as a youth player. After he first played in the Tercera especial in 1949 , he came in 1950 during the time of the absence of the World Cup drivers to five missions in the Primera División , in which he scored two goals. Abbadie, who was actually on the left, played as a right striker alongside Juan Hohberg . For 1951, when shirt numbers were used for the first time, Luciano Álvarez then noted the rise of Abbadie. Abbadie was permanently in the squad from at least 1952 to 1956. From 1956 he worked in Italy. There he played for Genoa 1893 until 1960 . His most successful season for him personally with the team from the Ligurian Sea was the 1957/58 season , when he was the most successful shooter of his team with 13 goals. The best finish of the season achieved with the Northern Italians was twice the 13th place. The season 1959/60 ended his club as bottom of the table and was relegated. In the following period he was in the ranks of AC Lecco until 1962 . Finally he returned to Uruguay in 1962 and played again as a player in Peñarols until 1969. With the Aurinegros he won the Copa Libertadores against River Plate in 1966 (2: 0, 2: 3 and 4: 2 n.V. in the playoff), where he contributed one goal each to the title win in both the first final and the playoff. Then he and his teammates won the World Cup against Real Madrid (2-0, 2-0). There are also eight Uruguayan championships in 1951, 1953, 1954, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1967 and 1968 for Abbadie. Abbadie played a total of 468 games for Peñarol and scored 137 goals.

National team

Abbadie made his debut on March 23, 1952 at the Pan American Football Championship 1952 in the encounter against the Mexican selection, in which he scored his first goal in the national jersey, in the Uruguayan national football team . Abbadie took part in the 1954 World Cup, in which the Celeste only failed in the semi-finals to Hungary, and met there twice in the game against Scotland . He was also part of the squad at the Campeonato Sudamericano in 1955 , was used five times and with three goals was Uruguay's most successful tournament shooter alongside Galván and Míguez. Another tournament he played in the ranks of the national team was the Copa del Atlántico 1956. On July 24, 1963, he was also used again in the context of the Copa Juan Pinto Durán for Uruguay, which the team from the Río de la Plata against the Chilean selection won. He was also a member of the Celeste's preparatory games for the 1966 World Cup. After his active career, Abbadie also worked as a coach. In 1977 he coached the Danubio FC team . In 1982 he was selected by the department of Maldonado Campeón del Interior .

Others

Julio Abbadie's one year older brother Rubén Abbadie also appeared as a football player for Nacional Montevideo . The stadium in Pan de Azúcar is called Abbadies. A grandstand at the Estadio Domingo Burgueño is also named after him.
