Julius Bernis

Karl Julius Gottlieb Bernis (born July 25, 1809 in Memel , † June 20, 1875 in Naumburg (Saale) ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Julius was a son of the building inspector Friedrich Wilhelm Bernis († 1819) and his wife Anna Florentine, née Redowski († 1819). She was the sister of the doctor and explorer Johann Redowsky (1773-1807).

Military career

Bernis joined the 1st Pioneer Department of the Prussian Army as a pioneer on October 1, 1826 and graduated from the United Artillery and Engineering School in 1827/30 . In the meantime, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant of the 1st Engineer Inspection on September 30, 1829 with a patent from October 4, 1829 , but remained assigned to his department. On July 15, 1833 he was appointed department adjutant and from the end of June 1836 he performed fortification service in the Posen fortress and from the end of February 1839 in the Koblenz fortress . Bernis was transferred to the 3rd Engineer Inspection as Second Adjutant on July 1, 1840, and in this capacity was promoted to Prime Lieutenant at the end of June 1843 . This was followed by his transfer to the 7th Pioneer Department on April 29, 1847. Bernis was promoted to captain and commander of the 2nd Company at the end of March 1848 . The following year, on April 24, 1849, he was transferred to the Federal Fortress of Luxembourg as commander of the 1st Reserve Pioneer Department . On March 1, 1853, he came to the first engineer inspection and was garrison construction director of the 5th Army Corps . Promoted to major on March 29, 1856 , he became the fortress construction director of the Poznan Fortress on January 6, 1857. He rose to lieutenant colonel on July 1, 1860 and received the Order of the Red Eagle III on the occasion of the festival in January 1861 . Class with a bow and on July 18, 1861 the character as a colonel . Bernis was appointed inspector of the 4th fortress inspection on May 15, 1862, with the award of the patent for his rank. In this position he was given the character of major general on September 20, 1866 and on April 9, 1868 he was put up for disposal with a pension .

For the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Bernis was reused in 1870/71 as commander of the 35th Infantry Brigade . He died on June 20, 1875 in Naumburg (Saale).

family

Bernis married Berta von Steinaecker (1829–1890), a daughter of Major General Heinrich Bruno von Steinaecker , on July 20, 1849 in Kolberg . The marriage resulted in the son Heinrich (* 1850), second lieutenant in the infantry regiment "von der Marwitz" (8th Pomeranian) No. 61 and the daughter Agnes Anna (* 1851).
