Heinrich Ferdinand Julius von Westernhagen (born June 26, 1828 in Teistungen , † April 7, 1905 in Darmstadt ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Origin and family

He came from the Eichsfeld family of Uradels von Westernhagen and was the son of Lewin von Westernhagen on Teistungen-Oberhof (1800-1870) and his wife Leopoldine, née Hofmann (1804-1888).

He was married twice, the first in 1856 to Johanna Frieß-Hasenkamp (1836-1860) and the second in 1862 to Auguste Defoy (1835-1902). His son Heinrich von Westernhagen (1864–1925) was also a major general of several children and commanded the Life Guard Infantry Regiment (1st Grand Ducal Hessian) No. 115 during the World War .

Career

At the beginning of 1846 Westernhagen joined the 26th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a fusilier , where he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich in September of the same year and to Second Lieutenant in September 1848 . He then took part in the campaign in Baden , in particular the battles near Ubstadt , Durlach and Michelbach . In the spring of 1851 he was assigned to the rifle factory in Sömmerda for two months . In December 1851 he was Adjutant of the Fusilier Battalion . In 1857 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and in 1858 became a company commander in the 2nd Battalion in Burg of the 26th Landwehr Regiment. 1859 changed to the III. Battalion in Neuhaldensleben . With his promotion to captain in 1860, he also became company commander in Infantry Regiment No. 26.

In the German War he took part in the battle near Münchengrätz and the Battle of Königgrätz , where he was wounded, and was awarded the Order of the Crown, IV Class with Swords , in September 1866 .
