Yuri Andreevich Ossipjan ( Russian Ю́рий Андре́евич Осипья́н ; born February 15, 1931 in Moscow ; † September 10, 2008 ibid) was a Russian solid-state physicist and university professor .

Life

Ossipjan studied at the Moscow Institute for Steels and Alloys with a degree in 1955 under GW Kurdjumow and then at the Lomonossow University in Moscow until 1959. 1955–1962 he worked in the Institute for Metal Physics of the ZNII Black Metallurgy Group and 1962–1963 in the Institute for Crystallography of Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-USSR) . In his scientific work he investigated the effects of the interaction of electrons with a solid and discovered the effect of optical excitation on the plastic deformation ( photoplastic effect ) of semiconductors . He developed the theory of dislocations in the semiconductor crystal .

Together with the founding director GW Kurdjumow, Ossipjan built the Institute for Solid State Physics of the AN-USSR in Chernogolowka near Moscow and headed it until his death. In 1968 he received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences . In 1981 he was appointed professor and elected as a real member of the AN-USSR, of which he was vice-president from 1988-2001 (since 1991 Russian AN). In Chernogolovka he was the chairman of the board of directors of the Scientific Center of the AN-USSR from 1980-2004. In the 1980s, Ossipjan and his institute also carried out microgravity experiments on board the Mir space station . After 2000 he also examined fullerenes .

In addition to his work at the Institute of Solid State Physics , Ossipjan has headed the Chair of Solid State Physics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology since 1964 , and he headed the Chair of Condensed Matter Physics at the Lomonosov University in Moscow . 2006–2008 he was Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Chemistry at Lomonosov University. In addition, he was First Vice President of the International Union for Pure and Applied Physics . He was chief editor of the Russian journal Surface: Physics, Chemistry, Mechanics and co-editor of the journal Kristallographie as well as chief editor of the popular science journal Quant of the Nauka publishing house .

In 1990 Ossipjan became a member of the Presidential Council of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet .

Ossipjan's grave is in the Makarovo Cemetery in Chernogolovka.
