The Institute for Culture and Media Management Hamburg (KMM Hamburg) is a teaching and research institution belonging to the State University for Music and Theater Hamburg (HfMT) . It offers both face-to-face and distance learning courses in culture and media management with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) degree. The institute also has the right to award doctorates . With more than 500 students, 18 professors and around 50 lecturers , the KMM Hamburg Institute is one of the leading institutions of its kind nationwide .

location

The KMM Hamburg institute has been located in the Hamburg-Altona district since spring 2012 . The offices, seminar rooms and research centers are housed under one roof in the premises at Grosse Bergstrasse 264/266. The institute was previously located on the premises of the HfMT , the Budge-Palais on Harvestehuder Weg .

history

In 1987, the " Cultural Management " course was first established in Germany at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . This should provide the budding artists with the means to cope with the increasing economic challenges in the cultural sector. In 1998, the ZEIT Foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius set up an endowed professorship with the task of creating an institutional offering that goes beyond the course . Friedrich Loock took over the C4 chair . In 1999 "culture management" became "culture and media management ". In the year 2000, the Institute for Culture and Media Management Hamburg was founded out of this advanced diploma course, which Friedrich Loock also took over and held until October 2015. As part of a cooperation with the Distance University of Hagen , the KMM Hamburg also took over the Hagen distance learning course "Cultural Management" in 2007, as the Distance University in turn discontinued it. On October 1st, 2015 Reinhard David Flender took over the management of the institute.

Since it was founded, the KMM Hamburg Institute has been able to establish itself to a large extent and now has a nationwide presence. The strong interlinking of theory and practice as well as high-ranking and prominent culture and media experts who, as lecturers and professors, ensure that the courses are up to date, shape the image of the institute today.

Institute areas

The KMM Hamburg is divided into the three institute areas of study , research and service , which work in close coordination with the subject areas of culture and media management. These three areas are explained below.

Education

Most of the students at KMM Hamburg, in addition to their own artistic work and their interest in art, culture and media, already have initial knowledge and experience in the professional field of culture and media management, which they can deepen during their studies. For university degrees , the KMM Hamburg offers a basic Bachelor of Arts and a postgraduate Master of Arts in distance learning as well as a consecutive Master of Arts in face- to- face study . In addition, the institute's own degree can be obtained in the form of advanced training certificates with various focuses in distance learning. The doctoral program for Dr. phil. can be accepted after an outstandingly successful master’s degree - including other culture and media-specific subjects. With the KMM Executive , the KMM Hamburg also offers an intensive course program lasting several days as advanced training for experienced managers , in which the participants can deepen management knowledge in selected subject areas.

research

The institute's research activities are assigned to the research department. In the three research centers foundation , non-profit management and cultural industry (creative sector), research is coordinated, the transfer of knowledge between institute members and external parties is promoted, and scientific work is carried out in central areas of cultural and media management. In addition, the institute takes on research assignments from cultural and media institutions. In the focus area, the institute turns to the topic of civil society (citizenship). The KMM Hamburg conducts both applied and basic research .

service

The Institute area service belong to all services offered by the KMM Hamburg. They can be assigned to four service focal points: advice, support, reports and publications . The services are available to external cultural and media institutions as well as the University of Music and Theater , the University of Hamburg and other artistic universities in the city ​​of Hamburg . The service includes B. the KMM consultation hours , which the institute offers monthly free of charge for cultural and media institutions and professionals, and the student advisory company Cassiopeia , which u. a. Supports companies in the cultural industry.

Course offer

The content offered by the KMM Hamburg Institute extends in all courses from financing and marketing to the presentation of legal aspects to the analysis and design of communication processes . The seminars are assigned to the following subject areas: economics and law , politics and society , leadership and organization, and culture and media . The courses prepare students for activities as managers as well as for other areas of responsibility in the management of cultural and media institutions. This includes institutions such as museums , theaters , festivals , orchestras , libraries , music schools , music colleges , film and television productions , broadcasters and sound recording manufacturers .

The courses in detail

The consecutive Master’s degree is offered as a face-to-face degree and is aimed at those interested in studying who would like to pursue a Bachelor's degree or a comparable degree with a postgraduate degree . An outstanding study element is the KMM project study . For several months, students are primarily responsible for the conception and implementation of real cultural and media projects in the greater Hamburg area. The course is designed for 4 semesters (including the final exam).

The undergraduate bachelor's degree is one of the distance learning courses offered by KMM Hamburg and is aimed at prospective students who want to get to know the basics of culture and media management. The course is designed for 6 semesters (including the final exam).

The postgraduate master’s degree is also a distance learning course . It replaced the advanced diploma course in February 2009 and is aimed at prospective students who have already completed a course of study , have practical work experience and would like to continue their education in the field of culture and media management. The course is designed for 4 semesters (including the final exam).

KMM certificates In addition to the above-mentioned courses, prospective students can take a short course at the KMM Hamburg institute. To do this, they select key areas of culture and media management according to their own interests. The study is, depending on individual characteristics, to 1 (excluding auditing) or 2 semester aligned (incl. Exam).

Network and alumni

The KMM Hamburg maintains contacts to numerous cultural and media institutions, theory and practice are equally important.
