The Kahl sources , often bald source , or earlier Kahlenborn and Kahl origin called, are two major sources on the edge of the upper Kahl ground in the district of Aschaffenburg in Lower Franconia , where the Spessart river Kahl springs. The sources are in the community-free area of Wiesener Forst .

geography

The orographic right (northern) Kahlquelle

The Kahlquellen are on the edge of the forest above the village of Bamberger Mühle (Kahlmühle), which belongs to the municipality of Kleinkahl . They are about 290  m above sea level. NHN in the Buchhalle forest area below the Koppe (437 m) and Steinberg (439 m) mountains .

The water of the young Kahl rises from two stratified springs in well rings , on the left and right of the 2305 state road . After just a few meters, both source streams merge. These springs pour an average of 50 to 60 liters of water per second and are among the strongest in the Spessart. In spring the discharge can rise to 100 l / s and in autumn it can drop to 40 l / s. On the right slope of the mountain there are numerous other springs that feed the trout breeding ponds of the Bamberg mill. Their mean total pour is about 10-20 liters per second.

The Degen-Weg and the Kahltal-Spessart-Radwanderweg lead past the Kahlquellen . The Marienkapelle is located about 500 m below the springs at the Kahlquelle . The Kleinkahlquelle is about 3 km south .

description

Overview map of the bald springs
Geological layers in cross section

The spring water in the mountain seeps through the gaps of the Upper and Lower Spessart colorful sand steins down to the clay layer of crumbling shale , which prevents deeper penetration. The bald springs arise on the layer boundary. There are several spring outlets, the water of which flows through small openings in the sandstone sockets into the round spring basins.

The circular spring taps were created to use the water. Both basins divert the water into two short collecting channels, from which the drive water was fed to the Bamberg mill via a mill channel . In addition, water was diverted to the meadows for irrigation.

The orographic left and south of the two springs pour heavier most of the year, but can sometimes dry up completely in hot summers . If the water level sinks, the spring water does not flow off via the stone collecting canal as usual, but reaches the Kahl stream bed through a pipe below the water surface. The left source is surrounded by a wooden railing because it is located directly on the slope. Your spring basin has a diameter of about 3 m and is 35–40 cm deep. The source of the right, northern Kahlquelle is 20 cm deep and has a diameter of approx. 4 m. It is located in the middle of a level, vegetation-free area that can be reached via a short wooden walkway. Both bald springs are under nature protection. Its water has a temperature of 7 ° C all year round and the water quality class I-II. It is highly saturated with oxygen .

The Lange Grund, which continues uphill towards the municipality of Wiesen , is mostly dry, but still belongs to the Kahl catchment area . After heavy rain or when the snow melts , however, much further northeast below the Dr. Karl-Kihn -Platzes on Greifenberg (483 m) a stream. It runs through the right valley branch Pfaffengrund between the mountains Koppe and Hoher Sang to the state road and then reaches the Kahlquellen in its ditch. At the right source socket, this water flows into an otherwise dry stream bed and flows into the right source stream. Often small springs arise outside the right basin at the edge of the path, the water of which flows into this creek bed.

Flora and fauna

Watercress and balsam grow at the Kahlquellen and spring moss in the basins . Cave shrimp used to be found in the spring water .
