Community-free area of ​​the Wiesener Forst

The Wiesener Forst is a 19.53 km² community-free area in the district of Aschaffenburg and is located in the northern part of the Bavarian Spessart . The area is completely forested .

The forest lies directly on the northern border with Hesse . It almost completely encloses the eponymous municipality of Wiesen . The highest point in the community-free area is just below the summit of the Schindershöh at 521  m above sea level. NN . Other striking mountains are the Erkelshöhe (517 m) and the Greifenberg (483 m). In the northern part of the forest there is an exclave of meadows, in which the campsite at Wiesbüttsee is located.

  • The origin of the river Kahl lies in the western part of the forest. The Kahlquellen, which are under nature protection, are among the largest springs in the Spessart.
  • On the left side of the slope in the Birklersgrund Birkberges (located at the foot of 480  m above sea level.  NHN ) the ruins of a glassworks (Birkberghütte). Because of its special shape, the almost ten meter long melting furnace, built in 1765, was also called the “butterfly furnace”. The glass manufactory was founded by major French companies. During excavations in 1979, the remains of the wall that are still visible today were uncovered. On a map from 1769 the Birkberghütte is shown as "Schmelz Hütten".
  • At the intersection of the historical Eselsweg and Birkenhainer Straße trade routes, Dr.-Karl Kihn-Platz is located in the north of the community-free area.

traffic

The Spessart-Höhenstraße (district road AB 2 and state road 2905) as well as the German Alps – Baltic Sea holiday route ( state road 2305 ) and the Kahltal-Spessart cycle path run through the Wiesener Forst .
