The Schöllkrippen forest is a 17.48 km² community-free area in the district of Aschaffenburg and is located in the northern part of the Bavarian Spessart . The area is completely wooded . The forest is not to be confused with the same name nearby district of the municipality Sommerkahl .

The area is located east of the eponymous market Schöllkrippen on the slopes of Eselshöhe . The highest point is the Spindelberg at 520  m above sea level. NN . The Reuschberg (415 m) rises in the western part, near the top of which there is a prominent transmission mast. In the area are two enclaves of Sommerkahl .

Culture and sights

Altenburg Castle Stables
  • On the summit of the Reuschberg is the Altenburg castle stables , a medieval hilltop castle that is no longer preserved.
  • In the northern part of the area is the Kleinkahlquelle , one of the larger stratified springs in the Spessart.
  • At the Röderhof there is a former sandstone quarry ( geotope ) that has been designated a natural monument .
  • In the north of the Schöllkrippen forest is the renatured Kafloos spring .
