The Kaiser-Otto-Höhenweg is a 14-kilometer long hiking trail on the southeastern edge of the Harz Mountains in the Mansfeld-Südharz district in Saxony-Anhalt. It connects Sangerhausen with Bennungen.

history

The hiking trail got its current name with its official opening on November 23, 2012, the 1100th birthday of Emperor Otto I. Otto the Great was probably born near Wallhausen in 912, south of today's hiking trail. From 936 he was Duke of Saxony and King of Eastern Franconia , from 951 King of Italy and from 962 Roman-German Emperor in the Holy Roman Empire . Otto I died in Memleben in 973 .

Description and integration into the local network of hiking trails

The Kaiser-Otto-Höhenweg follows a ridge that runs parallel to the northern edge of the Harz in a west-southwest-east-northeast direction and lies south of the southern Harz karst landscape in the north of the Golden Aue . The most important elevations of the ridge are the Butterkuppe and the vineyard.

The hiking trail begins at the Sangerhausen train station and continues over the Butterkuppe, the Pfeiffersheim settlement , the pumpkin hill and a rest area with a pavilion to the Bennungen train station. It is characterized by numerous vantage points, orchards, smaller forest areas and meadows as well as the flora and fauna associated with them.

In Bennungen the Kaiser-Otto-Höhenweg is connected to the paths of German emperors and kings of the Middle Ages in the Harz with the associated Kaiserweg . The karst hiking trail can also be reached via circular route 3 at Großleinungen, which is described in the following section .
