The Biosphere Reserve Karstlandschaft Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt is a biosphere reserve under national law without recognition from UNESCO. It is the 16th biosphere reserve in Germany.

history

As early as 1992, the Thuringian state parliament commissioned the state government to create the framework for the establishment of a biosphere reserve. In a joint cabinet decision of the states of Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt , the development of the reserve was decided in 1992. In 2002 the reservation administration in Roßla started its work. On March 23, 2009 the reserve was finally declared a biosphere reserve by the Saxony-Anhalt Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. Recognition by UNESCO failed in 2013 due to resistance from some affected communities to the application. The biosphere reserve according to state law already fulfills the required criteria, and in the long term recognition by UNESCO will continue to be sought.
