Kamieniec ( German Steindorf ; 1943–1945 Wiesensteindorf ) is a village and seat of the Gmina Kamieniec in the powiat Grodziski in the Greater Poland Voivodeship .

history

An important grave of the Aunjetice culture was found in Łęki Małe .

The village of Kamieniec was first mentioned in 1303, in 1510 a church already existed there. Earlier names of the place were Kamencz or Kamones.

In the period between 1871 and 1918, when this area was part of the Prussian province of Posen, most of the villages in the rural community of Kamieniec belonged to what was then the Schmiegel district .

Even if the German name Steindorf was temporarily introduced for Kamieniec at the time of the German occupation from 1939 to 1945, there is no evidence that the name Kamieniec is derived from the Polish word kamień = stone (although even the word kamienieć, a verb, exists with the German meaning "petrify"). The earlier names have nothing to do with it. From 1975 to 1998 the local administration was under the then Leszno Voivodeship .

In 2002 the rural community Kamieniec had an area of 132.23 km², 81% was used for agriculture, 9% was forest. The commune covers 20.54% of the total area of the Grodzisk Wielkopolski district, that is about a fifth.
