The canton of Esch an der Alzette is the southernmost and, after the canton of Luxembourg, the most populous canton of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . It borders in the north on the cantons of Capellen and Luxembourg , in the east on the canton Remich , in the south on the French region of Lorraine and in the west on the Belgian province of Luxembourg .

Until the abolition of the Luxembourg districts on October 3, 2015, the canton was part of the Luxembourg district .
