Kapitan Dranitsyn ( Russian “Капитан Драницын” ) is a Russian-flagged icebreaker and research vessel that was built in Finland for the Soviet Union . It has been used by the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute since October 1995.

The Kapitan Dranitsyn is a conventionally powered icebreaker that was built for conditions in the polar seas . In the 2000s it was converted to accommodate passengers with 49 outside cabins for 100 more people. In addition to accommodation, the ship has lounges, bars, a heated pool, a fitness studio, a sauna, a library and an infirmary .

Calls

The main activity of the icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn is to accompany cargo ships on the sea routes in the northern polar region. He has also made tourist trips to Franz Josef Land , Svalbard , Novaya Zemlya and Chukotka , to the Bering Strait and (with the help of an atomic icebreaker ) to the North Pole .

The Kapitan Dranitsyn has completed research voyages in the Barents Sea , Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean . In 1996 she made the first trip around the world. In the same year the icebreaker participated in the rescue of the German passenger ship Hanseatic .

In 2000 the icebreaker made a long journey from Hammerfest in Norway via Keflavik ( Iceland ) - Stromfiord ( Greenland ) - Canadian Arctic - Alaska - Chuktotka to Murmansk . In 2002, 2003 and 2004 he undertook research expeditions to the Laptev Sea .

In January 2017, the ship was trapped in ice off the coast of Pewek on the Chukchi Peninsula .

During the MOSAiC Arctic Expedition , the Kapitan Dranitsyn carried out a delivery trip to the North Pole researching Polarstern as a supply ship in spring 2020 . Since the Kapitan Dranitsyn had used up most of her fuel reserves for the outward journey, she herself was dependent on supplies from the Admiral Makarow .
