Karl August Adalbert Graf zu Solms-Wildenfels (born September 7, 1823 in Potsdam , † February 28, 1918 in Berlin-Halensee ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

He was the son of Otto Graf zu Solms-Wildenfels (1794-1834), from a 1806 mediatized imperial family, and Pauline Adele Sophie Freiin von Sirtema van Grovestins (1802-1848) from the old Dutch-Frisian nobility. August zu Solms-Wildenfels was a great-great-nephew of Friedrich Ludwig zu Solms-Wildenfels and Tecklenburg (1708–1789) and a great-great-grandson of his father Heinrich Wilhelm zu Solms-Wildenfels-Laubach (1675–1741).

Military career

From 1834 Solms-Wildenfels visited the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . He then began his career in 1840 as a second lieutenant in the Guard Cuirassier Regiment of the Prussian Army in Potsdam. It was appropriate for a member of the evangelical German aristocracy not to be conscripted to serve in one of the exclusive mounted Prussian guard regiments in one of the royal cities and thus in the vicinity of the King of Prussia. Prime lieutenant since 1843 , Solms-Wildenfels took part in the street fight in Berlin on March 18, 1848 . In the war against Austria in 1866 he fought as a major and squadron chief at Skalitz , Schweinschädel and in the battle of Königgrätz .

After the war he was given command of the 11th Uhlan Regiment in October 1866 and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in December . In the war against France in 1870/71 he was in the sieges of the forts of Metz , Toul and Paris and in the battles of Beaugency-Cravant and Le Mans at the head of his regiment, for which Solms-Wildenfels received the Iron Cross 2nd class. Appointed commander of the 29th Cavalry Brigade in June 1873 and promoted to major general, he finished his career as lieutenant general in September 1881 , decorated with the Order of the Red Eagle II Class with Oak Leaves and the Order of the Crown, First Class .
