Karl Baumgartner (producer)
Karl Baumgartner (born January 3, 1949 in Bruneck , South Tyrol , Italy ; † March 18, 2014 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a film producer and co-founder of the production and distribution company Pandora Film . Baumgartner was one of the most important producers and film distributors in Germany.
Life
Baumgartner grew up in Bruneck, where he completed his compulsory schooling and made his first hobby films with Ivo Barnabò Micheli . In 1967, at the age of 18, he entered the film business in Rome as an assistant director and critic. In 1971 Baumgartner moved to Frankfurt, where he joined filmmakers working with the Harmonie collective , which in the following years advanced to become one of the most important producers and agents in the field of arthouse film .
In 1981 Baumgartner and Reinhard Brundig founded the film distribution company Pandora Film , one of the leading European distributors of art house films. Pandora Film is considered the discoverer of non-German-speaking filmmakers such as Andrei Tarkowski , Jim Jarmusch , Sally Potter , Kim Ki Duk and Aki Kaurismäki . As part of Pandora Film up Baumgartner operated as a film producer. Emir Kusturica's film "Underground" from 1995 is one of the most important productions in this context.
In 2003, Karl Baumgartner and Thanassis Karathanos founded the Halle- based production company Pallas Film , which specialized in the production of Eastern European films. In 2006 he founded the rights dealer and world distributor The Match Factory together with Brundig and Michael Weber . Baumgartner was a member of the German Film Academy , the European Film Academy and the Asian Film Academy .
Baumi Script Development Award
In memory of Karl Baumgartner, the Baumi Script Development Award was announced for the first time in July 2015 . The prize, endowed with 20,000 euros, is intended to continue Baumgartner's commitment to art house cinema and, in this regard, enable young scriptwriters to make their films. The sponsoring institutions of the award are Baumgartner's family, the company Pandora Film and the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW .
