Karl Eigen

Karl Eigen (born November 3, 1927 in Lübeck ; † May 13, 2016 ) was a German farmer, CDU politician (for which he was a member of the German Bundestag four times ), long-time president of the Schleswig-Holstein Farmers' Association and one of the promoters of cultivation from rapeseed to produce biodiesel .

Life

Karl Eigen attended high school , which he left in 1943 because he was called up as a flak helper . In 1944 he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and then called into the Wehrmacht . After the end of the Second World War , he completed an agricultural apprenticeship , after which he passed the master's examination to become an agricultural master .

In 1951 Karl Eigen took over his parents' farm in Klein Parin . From 1969 to 1984 he was chairman of the Eutin District Farmers 'Association and at the same time 1st Vice President of the Schleswig-Holstein State Farmers' Association. Elected chairman of the Schleswig-Holstein State Farmers' Association in 1984, remained in this position until 1994 and was then appointed honorary president.

Under his leadership, the German Farmers' Association and the Federal Association of German Plant Breeders jointly founded the Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (Ufop), whose first chairman became his own. From 1993 to 1995 he was also chairman of the Agency for Renewable Raw Materials (FNR), which was also brought into being on his initiative. In this way Eigen became one of the founders and pioneers of rapeseed cultivation for the production of biodiesel . In 2009, together with Dietrich Brauer, he founded and financed the “Karl Eigen und Dr. hc Dietrich Brauer Foundation ”, which is dedicated to promoting science and research in the field of oil and protein crops.

He was a Protestant , married and had two children.

Karl Eigen joined the CDU in 1958 . From 1961 to 1995 he was the village head of Klein Parin. From 1962 to 1969 he was a member of the community council of Stockelsdorf . From 1972 to 1976 and from 1980 and 1990 he was a member of the German Bundestag . In 1972 he was first drawn into the 7th German Bundestag via the state list of the CDU Schleswig-Holstein , but was defeated four years later as an applicant for the direct mandate in the newly formed Bundestag constituency of Rendsburg-Eckernförde to the later Prime Minister Heide Simonis . From 1980 to 1983 he moved into the 9th German Bundestag again via the CDU state list , before he represented the Bundestag constituency Plön - Neumünster in the 10th and 11th German Bundestag as a directly elected member from 1983 to 1990 .

In the Bundestag he served a. a. Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture and Forestry.

Honor

Karl Eigen was a bearer of the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
