from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Friedrich von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (born January 9, 1724 in Sigmaringen , † December 20, 1785 in Krauchenwies ) was Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen , Lord of Haigerloch and Wehrstein from 1769 to 1785 .

Life

Karl Friedrich was the son of Prince Joseph Friedrich Ernst von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1702–1769) from his first marriage to Marie Franziska (1703–1737), daughter of Prince Franz Albrecht zu Oettingen-Spielberg . The prince was first brought up in Sigmaringen and Munich . This was followed by training at the universities of Freiburg , Göttingen and Ingolstadt . He returned to Sigmaringen in 1746 and soon afterwards undertook a cavalier tour, a kind of educational journey, through Germany, Austria and Italy , which took him to several large courts.

Karl Friedrich then went to see his relatives in the Netherlands . It was there that he met his future wife. He married on March 2, 1749 at Schloss Kail Johanna (1727–1787), daughter of Count Franz Wilhelm von Hohenzollern-Berg . The marriage was not only concluded for political reasons, but rather Karl Friedrich had a deep affection for his fiancée and wife. Johanna was heiress to the lucrative Dutch county of Bergh-s'Heerenberg . After the marriage, he stayed on the estates of his Dutch father-in-law more often than in the principality of his family.

Karl Friedrichs experienced the Seven Years' War on the side of Maria Theresa of Austria against Prussia . Until 1763 he served in a cavalry regiment as part of the troops of the Swabian Empire . The troops fought hard against the Prussian cavalry led by Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz . The military conflict had almost no effects on Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, which favored the development of the economy. Karl Friedrich was Treasurer of the Holy Roman Empire and Lieutenant General Field Marshal of the Swabian Empire . Otherwise the prince was very enthusiastic about hunting.
