Karl Friedrich Wilhelm von Winterfeldt (born July 26, 1813 in Neisse ; † March 30, 1867 in Mainz ) was the Prussian major general and most recently in command of the Mainz fortress .

Life

His parents were the lieutenant of the 8th Garrison Battalion Karl Friedrich Wilhelm von Winterfeldt (born April 19, 1788, † April 10, 1818) and his wife Maria Chorus.

Career

He first attended grammar school in Breslau, in 1825 he came to Potsdam as a cadet and then came to Berlin on August 9, 1828 as a cadet . From there he went on August 13, 1830 as portepee ensign in the 11th Infantry Regiment . On September 14, 1831 he became redundant second lieutenant and on March 14, 1833 he was added to the budget. He was then assigned to the Cadet House in Wahlstatt on August 27, 1839 , on November 30, 1841, he was transferred to the Cadet House in Kulm as Prime Lieutenant , from there on March 31, 1846 he was transferred to the 23rd Infantry Regiment . On June 10, 1848 he was appointed captain and company commander. During the March Revolution of 1849 he took part in the street fighting in Wroclaw . On January 31, 1850, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class , and on April 1, 1853, he was posted to the Infantry Training Battalion. But already on November 8, 1853 he was promoted to major and transferred to the 7th Landwehr Regiment, where he was commander of the III. Battalion in Löwenberg in Silesia . On April 28, 1857, he was transferred to the Emperor Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 as a battalion commander , where he was appointed lieutenant colonel on May 31, 1859 . During the mobilization of 1859 he was deployed on June 14, 1859 as the commander of the mobile 3rd Guards Landwehr Regiment and on October 28, 1859 he was awarded the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus 2nd class with a crown . On May 8, 1860, he came to the 1st Combined Guard Grenadier Regiment as a leader and on July 1, 1860 as a commander in the newly established Queen Elisabeth Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 3 . There he was promoted to colonel on October 18, 1861 , and on January 3, 1863, he was awarded the Cross of Honor 2nd Class of the Hohenzollern House Order and on January 18, 1863 the Order of the Red Eagle 3rd Class with Ribbon . He took part in the German-Danish War in 1864 and received the swords for the Order of the Red Eagle on June 14, 1864 and the Austrian Order of the Iron Crown 2nd class with war decorations on August 21, 1864 . On August 13, 1864, he was transferred to the 6th Infantry Brigade as a commander and was placed à la suite with the 3rd Guards Grenadier Regiment . Promoted to major general on July 18, 1865, he took part in the German War in 1866 . He fought in the battle near Gitschin and in the battle near Königgrätz . On September 20, 1866 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd Class with Oak Leaves and Swords on the Ring. Subsequently, on March 5, 1867, he was transferred to the Mainz fortress as commandant and died there of pneumonia on March 30, 1867 .

His battalion commander wrote in his assessment in 1847: An educated, decent, diligent, prudent and very useful officer, who in no way can be seen that he had been withdrawn from Prussian service for a long time due to his years of service in the cadet corps. He married Emilie Stephanie Ida von Kczeski, a daughter of the manor owner Anton von Kczeski (* December 25, 1824, † April 16, 1891) on October 24, 1843 in Kulm. The couple had a daughter Hedwig (* 1844) who died on April 18, 1858 in Berlin.
