Karl Theodor Hermann Joseph Freiherr Geyr von Schweppenburg (born November 19, 1801 in Cologne , † February 19, 1875 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Karl was a son of the deputy mayor of Cologne and designated Vogt-Major in Aachen Joseph Heinrich Emanuel Geyr von Schweppenburg (1774-1814) and his wife Maria Agnes Klara, née Hendrix (1782-1834).

Military career

Geyr joined the 5th Artillery Brigade of the Prussian Army as a gunner on January 12, 1816 and, after attending the United Artillery and Engineering School , advanced to secondary lieutenant at the end of April 1820 . At the end of January 1821 he was transferred to the 7th Artillery Brigade. Due to his good riding skills, Geyr was assigned to a teaching squadron at the beginning of October 1824 and was appointed adjutant a year later . Upon release from this command, he was transferred to the Guard Hussar Regiment on June 14, 1828 . By mid-January 1841, Geyr was promoted to Rittmeister and squadron chief . During the March uprising , he disguised as the coachman's companion and brought the children of the future Kaiser Wilhelm I from the capital to safety. Promoted to major at the end of December 1848 , Geyr went to the court in Saint Petersburg a year later, accompanied by the Prince of Württemberg . After his return, Geyr was appointed commander of the Guard Hussar Regiment on May 11, 1854 and in this capacity was promoted to colonel until May 1858 . Under position à la suite of his regiment, he was from June 8, 1858 to April 12, 1861 commander of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade . Then, at his request, Geyr was given command of the 14th Cavalry Brigade in Düsseldorf . In September 1861 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle II. Class with Oak Leaves and on October 18, 1861, on the occasion of Wilhelm I's coronation , he was promoted to major general. Under awarding of the character as a lieutenant general Geyr took on 4 September 1864 its farewell with pension before 22 March 1865 of his previous pension for disposition was made.

After his departure, Geyr was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern on July 23, 1869 . He was a knight of the Order of Malta and was buried after his death on February 23, 1875 in the Berlin Invalidenfriedhof .

Geyr married on March 25, 1833 in Blankenburg with Bianka von dem Knesebeck (1812-1892), a niece of Field Marshal Karl Friedrich von dem Knesebeck . The following children were born from the marriage:
