Karl Gottlob Semisch (born December 31, 1810 in Prettin , Wittenberg district , † April 20, 1888 in Berlin ) was a Protestant theologian .

Life

Coming from a poor family as the son of a carpenter, Semisch was still able to attend high school in Torgau for six years . After graduating from high school, he studied Protestant theology at the University of Leipzig . In January 1833, he passed the first theological examination at the Friedrichs University in Halle . In the autumn of the same year he went to Breslau as a tutor for the children of his Leipzig professor August Hahn . Here he passed the second theological test in June 1834. Then he was assistant preacher in Breslau until he got a position as a deacon in Trebnitz in Silesia in 1838 . Here he was able to pursue scientific studies and in 1840/42 publish the two-volume monograph Justin the Martyr .

Based on this work, Semisch became professor for theology at the University of Greifswald in 1844 . In 1850/51 he was rector of the university.

In 1855 he moved to the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University in Breslau . In 1861 he was rector again. In 1866 Semisch finally went to Berlin. In the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia , he was Christian Wilhelm Niedner's successor on the chair for church history. At the same time he worked in the consistory . He died at the age of 79.
