life and work

Karl Hoff was born in September 1838 as the son of a pastry chef. From 1855 to 1858 he studied at the Karlsruhe Art School under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Ludwig des Coudres . In the summer of 1858 Hoff followed the call of the Düsseldorf School of Painting and moved to Düsseldorf to continue his studies under Benjamin Vautier's guidance.

In 1862 he spent half a year in Paris. A series of study trips to Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Dalmatia and Montenegro followed and broadened his horizons and, after setting up his own business in Düsseldorf in 1862, helped to make a name for himself with a number of serious and cheerful genre pictures . He liked to paint compositions with costume figures, which were characterized by happy invention, pleasing coloring, fine characteristics and elegant treatment.

Karl Hoff, a very active member of the artists' association Malkasten , was president of the General Association of Carnival Friends in Düsseldorf (AVdK) from 1870 to 1872 . Hoff was also active as a poet. A number of seals, u. a. of those for the Kaiserfest in the Malkasten in Düsseldorf in 1877, he wrote the festival in honor of Kaiser Wilhelm I with tableaux vivants on the occasion of his visit to the Malkasten-Haus . In 1878 he wrote the comical epic “Schein”, a sketchbook in verse. Hoff got involved in the private initiative Zoopark , for which a public limited company was founded in 1874 by the animal welfare association Fauna . The private initiative wanted to ensure that, in addition to the construction activities in Düsseldorf, the parks were not neglected.

During the summer of 1878 Hoff was appointed professor at the Karlsruhe Academy, as the successor to Wilhelm Riefstahl, who had moved to Munich . There he bought a house at Oststrasse 34, which he later sold to the history and portrait painter Heinrich Johann Sinkel . Hoff's students included Hans Bachmann in Düsseldorf and Alexander Koester , Julius Fehr and the history painter Carl Becker in Karlsruhe . His brochure “Artists and Art Writers” from 1882 contained violent attacks against art criticism. He distinguished himself as a highly skilled arranger when in 1886 he ordered the great historical pageant for the 500th anniversary celebration of Heidelberg University.

He died on May 13, 1890 at the age of 51, after only a short illness of pulmonary consumption .
