Karl Ritter von Schönhals (born November 15, 1788 in Braunfels near Wetzlar ; † February 16, 1857 in Graz ) was a kk Feldzeugmeister and military writer .

Life

Karl Schönhals joined the Austrian Jägerregiment No. 64 as a private cadet in 1807 and was seriously wounded again in 1809 as a lieutenant in the 2nd Jäger Battalion in the Battle of Aspern and in 1813 near Dresden . He then took up the general staff career. In 1821 he took part in the expedition to Naples as a captain in the 3rd Jäger Battalion under the command of General Frimont . In 1829 he was promoted to major in the Prinz von Hohenlohe Infantry Regiment No. 17 and adjutant of the General Command in Verona , and in 1830 Schönhals was promoted to lieutenant colonel and adjutant general to General Frimont in Milan . After Count Radetzky had received general command of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia in 1832 , Schönhals was assigned the rank of colonel . On May 7, 1838 he became major general , on April 3, 1848 Lieutenant Field Marshal . He was the author of Radetzky's army orders, especially during the war of 1848/49.

In 1848 he made great contributions to maintaining the Austrian army. When the provisional central authority of the German Confederation in Frankfurt am Main was abolished in 1849 and replaced by plenipotentiaries from Austria and Prussia, Schönhals represented the Austrian Empire alongside Karl Friedrich Kübeck Freiherr von Kübau until the commission was dissolved and the Bundestag reinstated.

After he had been promoted to Feldzeugmeister on December 28, 1850, he took his leave at the beginning of 1851 because of the consequences of his serious war injuries and devoted himself to writing biographical and military-historical literature. He lived in Graz , where he was looked after by his sister Henriette Schönhals. His tomb is located in the Protestant cemetery St. Peter in the place where he died, Graz.
