Justus Joseph Georg Friedrich Karl (also: Carl ) Zimmermann (* 23 August 1803 in Darmstadt ; † 12 June 1877 ibid) was a Protestant theologian and court preacher of the Hessian Grand Ducal .

Karl Zimmermann was the son of the director of the pedagogue in Darmstadt, Johann Georg Zimmermann and his wife Henriette Charlotte nee Klein. He was Ernst Zimmermann's brother and married Wilhelmine Klein. The following children were born from the marriage:

  • Karl Zimmermann (1830–1879), co-preacher in Erbach in 1857, pastor in Jugenheim in 1859.
  • Georg Zimmermann (1831–1878), postal secretary in Darmstadt
  • Theodor Zimmermann (1834–1902), District Court Secretary in Darmstadt
  • Wilhelm Zimmermann (1842–1911), doctor of philosophy, professor, senior teacher at the secondary school in Darmstadt

Life

Karl Zimmermann attended grammar school in Darmstadt from 1813 to 1820 and studied theology at the universities of Giessen and Heidelberg from 1821 to 1823 . During his studies in 1821 he became a member of the old Gießen fraternity Germania . After graduating, he worked as a private teacher and then as a co-owner of a private school in Darmstadt. From 1827 to 1833 he was a teacher at the secondary school in Darmstadt and at the same time from 1829 to 1832 he was ordained assistant preacher with the title of free preacher at the city church. From 1832 to 1835 he was court deacon and from 1833 to 1837 history teacher at the military school in Darmstadt.

From 1835 Zimmermann was second and from 1841 first court preacher in Darmstadt. In 1847 he was appointed superintendent of the Starkenburg province , pastor in Darmstadt, senior consistorial councilor and prelate .

Zimmermann became known primarily through the establishment and promotion of the Gustav Adolf Foundation and through his work and influence as editor of church and theological journals:

  • the continuation of the Allgemeine Kirchenzeitung and the Allgemeine Schul-Zeitung, which his brother started in 1822
  • the editorship of the homiletic magazine Die Sonntagsfeier. Weekly papers for pulpit eloquence and edification (1834–1871)
  • the foundation of a theological literature sheet (1841 ff.)
  • the messenger of the Gustav-Adolf-Verein published with Christian Gottlob Großmann since 1843

From 1847 to 1849 and from 1851 to 1872 he was a member of the first chamber of the estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse as a prelate in accordance with the constitution of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

Retired in 1872, he died on June 12, 1877 in Darmstadt.
