Baron Karl von Simbschen (born July 26, 1794 in Milan , † March 26, 1870 in Teplitz ) was an Imperial Austrian field marshal lieutenant .

Life

origin

He was a son of the Imperial Feldzeugmeister Joseph Anton von Simbschen (1746-1820) and Rosalie von Wagner. His brothers were Joseph (1783–1824) and Ferdinand (1795–1873), both of whom were also officers of the imperial army.

Military career

He received his first military training at the Imperial and Royal Engineering Academy. The Wars of Liberation caused him to join the Uhlan regiment "Graf Merveldt" in July 1813 . As a lieutenant he fought in the battles near Kramburg, Feistritz and Hohlenburg, after which he commanded his own detachment to Idria. In Italy he took part in the siege of Palmanova and Legnano and also fought at Roverbella . In March 1814 he was promoted to first lieutenant .

In the 1815 campaign he served in the reserve corps under Archduke Ferdinand d'Este , he came into combat with the French near Basel and before Schlettstadt . After the peace he was assigned to the service of the General Staff in 1816. Back in the cavalry in 1828, he was promoted to Rittmeister and in 1831 took over the leadership of his own squadron . With the Kaiser-Uhlans he was promoted to major in August 1838 , in 1843 to lieutenant colonel and in 1847 to colonel . In May 1847 he became the commander of the Dragoon Regiment No. 6 "Count Ficquelmont". During the October Revolution of 1848 Simbschen led his regiment in the enclosure of Vienna, he fought on December 16, 1848 in the battle near Parendorf against the Hungarians.

In the Hungarian War of Independence

In the Hungarian War of Independence of 1849, Simbschen proved himself with a cavalry in almost all major battles. While the main army under Prince Windischgrätz was advancing on Ofen , he and his regiment took part in the enclosure of Komorn . In mid-April 1849 he took command of a cavalry brigade in Pest , which had to cover the 1st Corps. On April 21, he fought again at Rákos on April 26, before Komorn, he received the Order of the Iron Crown, 2nd class , for the attack by his subordinate cuirassier regiment "Graf Hardegg" .

On May 27, 1849 he was promoted to major general and commanded a cavalry brigade during the summer campaign of the FZM Julius von Haynau , which belonged to the corps of the FML Schlik , later the division of the FML von Lobkowitz and finally, at the end of the war, the independent cavalry division under Major General Bechtold was added. In the Third Battle of Komorn on July 11th, in the Battle of Szöreg on August 5th, in the battles near Besenyö on August 6th and two days later near Csatád , his cavalry fulfilled the hoped for expectations. In the battle of Temesvár on August 9th he fought his last major battle, on August 13th he occupied Lugos without a fight. By August 19, he fell into the hands of 3000 prisoners, 600 horses and 30 guns during the pursuit of the Hungarians under Ignác Török and while attacking Caransebes . With the non-fighting occupation of Orsova on August 25, the campaign was over for him.

Rest of life

On May 17, 1854 Simbschen was promoted to field marshal lieutenant, at the same time he was divisional in the second cavalry corps. In February 1857 he was awarded the ownership of the 7th Hussar Regiment . In 1858 he was appointed fortress commander of Theresienstadt . In June 1863 he celebrated his 50th anniversary in service and resigned from his army service on November 24, 1864. Simbschen retired to Schönau near Teplitz, where he increasingly devoted himself to his passion, hunting . In 1866 his health visibly deteriorated. He died in 1870 at the age of 76 and was buried in the cemetery in Teplitz.
