Karl Hermann von der Groeben (born November 23, 1826 in Ludwigsdorf ; † January 20, 1898 in Charlottenburg ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Karl was a son of the Majoratsherr on Ludwigsdorf Hans von der Groeben (1788–1837) and his wife Amande, born von Rosenberg-Gruszczynski (1796–1867). His brother Hermann (1828–1902) also became a Prussian major general.

Military career

Groeben first visited the old-urban high school and studied at the University in Königsberg . On October 1, 1848, he joined the 3rd Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a musketeer, and when he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich he was transferred to the 3rd Dragoon Regiment in mid-September 1849 . By mid-January 1866 he was promoted to Rittmeister and squadron chief . In this capacity, Groeben took part in the battles near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz and the battles near Pressburg in the same year during the war against Austria . For his behavior he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords. In the war against France in 1870/71, Groeben led his 4th squadron in the battle of Gravelotte and the sieges of Metz and Paris .
