criticism

Since 2014 Knebel has been criticized for wasting church funds. In the years 2008 to 2012, he was accused of having awarded the Gaißach artist and interior decorator Erwin Wiegerling orders of more than 1.4 million euros without a tender. An order volume of more than EUR 550,000 had already flowed to the same interior designer for the renovation of the chapter hall in the ordinariate building under the then Bishop Walter Mixa . Furthermore, Knebel had already awarded Wiegerling orders worth 505,000 euros during his time as pastor and dean in Füssen. At the end of July 2014, Knebel announced that he would have a side altar of the cathedral converted for 500,000 euros, although the existing altar was only completed 19 years ago. The order was supposed to go to an architect from Allgäu, but was stopped after the criticism. In addition, Knebel, as the top curator of the cathedral, planned to renew the praise for God , signposts, stands for sacrificial candles and writings. The cost estimate by the artist, who was commissioned again, was 100,000 euros. The order was withdrawn after it became known.
