Karsten Homrighausen

Karsten Homrighausen (* 1968 in Welzheim ) is a German chemist and fire officer . Since August 2018 he has been head of the Berlin fire brigade as state fire director .

Career

Homrighausen grew up in Herdecke and joined the youth fire brigade in Wetter in 1982 because his hometown did not have a youth department. In 1985 he finally switched to the volunteer fire brigade in Herdecke, where he was actively involved until 1998, most recently with the rank of fire chief .

After graduating from high school , he studied chemistry at the Ruhr University Bochum from 1989 . He has been a graduate chemist since 1994 .

Career in the fire department

In 1997 Homrighausen in Baden-Württemberg was appointed a government fire trainee and completed the preparatory service for the higher fire service at the state fire service school in Bruchsal by 1999 . This was followed by the appointment as fire assessor.

From 2000 to 2002, Homrighausen was a lecturer in leadership training at the state fire brigade school in Bruchsal, before moving to the department head of the Stuttgart fire department as a consultant until 2004.

He then took over the management of the fire department in Stuttgart until 2016. Homrighausen had been a board member of the Baden-Württemberg State Fire Brigade Association since 2002 and supported the Ministry of the Interior in the coordinating refugee staff in 2015 .

State Fire Director in Baden-Württemberg (2016-2018)

In April 2016, Homrighausen, meanwhile promoted to Chief Fire Director, was appointed the new head of the "Fire Brigade and Fire Protection" department in the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior, Digitization and Migration and at the same time appointed State Fire Director during a ceremony by Interior Minister Reinhold Gall . As a successor to Hermann Schröder, he moved to the head of the state fire brigade.

Homrighausen was retired from office on July 31, 2018 with a ceremony by Interior Minister Thomas Strobl .

State Fire Director in Berlin (since 2018)

On a proposal by Interior Minister Andreas Geisel was Homrighausen, in place of the retiring adopted Wilfried Gräfling , by the Berlin Senate appointed 1 August 2018 the new national Fire Chief of the Berlin Fire Department.

He took up his post on the same day under the civil service capacity of a state fire director on probation and thus leads the oldest and largest German professional fire service . At the same time, Homrighausen was commissioned to develop a “Fire Brigade 2030” concept for his new authority.

Homrighausen was officially introduced to his office with a ceremony by Interior Senator Andreas Geisel on November 20, 2018, alluding to the fire service emergency number , exactly 112 days after his appointment. Representatives from politics , administration as well as the security authorities and aid organizations took part in the event in the Bärensaal of the Senate Department for Internal Affairs and Sport . The guests included the President of the Berlin House of Representatives , Ralf Wieland and Berlin's police chief Barbara Slowik .

After a prescribed two-year probationary period as state fire director on probation, Homrighausen received his formal certificate of appointment as state fire director from the Interior Senator on July 31, 2020.

Karsten Homrighausen is a member of the Rescue Service Working Group of the Working Group of Heads of Professional Fire Brigades in Germany and has been involved in concepts for emergency rescue and securing major events since 2010 .

He also advised the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief on fire protection issues in connection with the soccer world championships in 2006 , 2010 and 2014 as well as the 2012 Olympic Games .

Homrighausen has also been a member of the Berlin Council for Democracy since February 2019 .

After Friedrich Kaufhold, who headed the Berlin fire brigade from 1957 to 1968, Homrighausen is the second head of the authorities with a doctorate .

Karsten Homrighausen was proposed by the Saxony-Anhalt State Fire Brigade Association as a candidate for the election of President of the German Fire Brigade Association on October 24, 2020.

Private

Karsten Homrighausen is married, has three children and lives in Berlin.
