Karsten Jahnke (born November 22, 1937 in Hamburg ) is a German concert and tour organizer.

Live and act

Jahnke, who trained as an import and export businessman , became interested in jazz early on . Influenced by broadcasts from the BFN , he attended concerts by Kid Ory , Sidney Bechet , Lionel Hampton and Albert Nicholas from 1953 . In 1959 he organized his first jazz event, a jazz band ball . He held his first official concert in 1961 in the small music hall in Hamburg with Franz Josef Degenhardt . Until 1969, Jahnke planned concert events as an after-work activity in addition to his job as a foreign trade merchant. He soon organized concerts ofMonty Sunshine , Alexis Korner , Ken Colyer , Insterburg & Co. or The Dubliners .

In 1972 he founded his concert directorate to organize around 15 concerts a month with five employees. Its concert management organizes up to 600 concerts per year, among others with Herbert Grönemeyer , Peter Gabriel , Elton John , Bob Dylan , U2 , Sting and The Strokes . In addition, he continued to organize jazz tours in which he presented established stars such as Dave Brubeck , Branford Marsalis , Diana Krall , Dianne Reeves , Herbie Hancock , Sonny Rollins and Nils Landgren , but also younger musicians such as Michael Wollny or Anke Helfrich .

Prizes and awards

Jahnke was honored as "Promoter of the Year" at the International Live Music Conference 2002 in London. In 2007 he was named “Hamburger of the Year” and received the Senator Biermann Ratjen Medal from the City of Hamburg for his services to Hamburg's musical life. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Live Entertainment Awards 2008. In the same year he was honored with the Jazzahead Skoda Award for his special commitment and services to the jazz genre . In 2010 he received an ECHO Jazz as a “jazz sponsor” .
