action
As a child, Katharina von Bora was brought up to the Augustinian women's choir in Brehna by her father . Later she moved to the Cistercian convent Marienthron in Nimbschen near Grimma , where she met Ave von Schönfeld . As a nun , she read Martin Luther's writings when she was in her early twenties . Deeply impressed, after a letter contact with him, she breaks out of the confines of monastic life with some of her fellow sisters.
She and her friend Ave are staying with the Cranach family in Wittenberg . Katharina offers herself in vain to the pharmacist as an assistant. She has to realize that under the given social circumstances her only permanent option is marriage or prostitution in order to secure her livelihood.
While Ave finally agrees to a marriage, Katharina initially rejects it vehemently. In her attitude she is increasingly being protected by Martin Luther. He experienced a vision on the night of the wedding celebration, wandered home injured and collapsed there. Katharina finds him and feels connected to him in her ideals. Against the resistance of Philipp Melanchthon , Katharina envisages a marriage with Luther. Eventually the two marry. In Wittenberg , which is still partly Catholic , Katharina is ostracized because of her connection to Luther. Finally, propaganda papers against the "Lutherin" are distributed. Thereupon Luther had a portrait of himself and Katharina spread.
In Luther's absence, she visits her father and brother, whom she cast out all the more because of the portrait. Katharina had the courtyard they shared, renewed, which earned her the respect of male-dominated society. She also takes on students to support themselves and grows vegetables and herbs herself.
15 years later Katharina and Martin have six children. Katharina insists that the eldest son Johannes also live with the family. Martin, on the other hand, demands that Johannes complete his education away from the family. She swears that she will never give away any of her children against their wishes and brings him back to Wittenberg. After the death of her father, she bought her family's property, about which she got into an argument with Luther. The death of the eldest daughter Magdalena puts the relationship to the test. After all, Luther recognized his greatest wealth in his wife and children.

Reviews
“The direction forces Striesow and Schuch from a youthful, powerful insecurity. Whether they do the one thing (they do it, wonderfully shy), whether Katharina clears out the mess around the scholar Luther (Striesow sometimes plays him adorable boyish), whether the couple builds up on the coffin of their beloved daughter and the anger at God, suffering ( Katharina), angry (Martin), has to process - in every scene you can feel the seriousness. This film makes us witnesses of the admirable historical adventure of creating the prerequisites for marriage to become an inner project, the soul place of two people that holds more together than child poop and fear of the future. "
“In the ARD film, Devid Striesow, a physiognomic ideal cast of the reformer, is an important pillar of the story. But her mainstay is Karoline Schuch, who first gives the heroine her face and shape. We see the world of the 16th century through hers, the eyes of a woman - and they sometimes rest on her husband, but not always. It is actually the focus. "
