Kevin James Sweeney (born January 17, 1970 in Elmhurst ) is an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Paterson .

Life

Kevin Sweeney attended Cathedral Preparatory Seminary High School and Cathedral Seminary in Douglaston . He earned a bachelor's degree from St. John's University in Queens . Sweeney then studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington . He received on 28 June 1997 at the St. James Cathedral by the Bishop of Brooklyn , Thomas Vose Daily , the sacrament of Holy Orders .

After ordination, Kevin Sweeney served as Vicar of Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Parish in Jamaica . From 1999 to 2001 he was also responsible for the Irish faithful in the diocese of Brooklyn. From 2003 to 2004, Sweeney served as Vicar of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Corona before becoming head of the Vocation Pastoral Office . In 2005 he was also a chaplain at the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn. Sweeney was first parish administrator and then pastor of Saint Michael Parish in Brooklyn in 2010 . From 2010 to 2013 he was also spiritual of the Jovenes de Valor and from 2011 to 2016 a member of the priestly council of the Brooklyn diocese. Kevin Sweeney has also been Dean of the Brooklyn Deanery 8 since 2013 and the Vocational Office Representative since 2014.

On April 15, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Paterson. The Archbishop of Newark , Joseph William Tobin Cardinal CSsR , donated on July 1 of the same year in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Paterson , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Brooklyn, Nicholas Anthony DiMarzio , and the Bishop Emeritus of Paterson, Arthur Joseph Serratelli .
