Kitaakita ( Japanese 北 秋田 市 , - shi , literally: "North Akita") is a city in Akita Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .

Kitaakita is northeast of Akita and southwest of Aomori .
history
The city of Kita-Akita was formed on March 22, 2003 from the amalgamation of the small towns ( machi ) Takanosu ( 鷹 巣 町 , -machi ), Aikawa ( 合川 町 , -machi ), Moriyoshi ( 森吉 町 , -machi ) and Ani ( 阿仁 町 , -machi ) in the district of Kita-Akita .
