The Komödie am Altstadtmarkt is the only unsubsidized private theater in the city of Braunschweig and at the same time Lower Saxony 's largest private boulevard and entertainment theater .

history

building

The three-storey building was built between 1715 and 1720 as a trade fair building, presumably based on a design by Hermann Korb . Schrader's hotel was located in house number 7, where Richard Wagner and his wife Cosima lived in April 1875 , who were attending a Tannhauser performance in Braunschweig. The ballroom of the hotel at that time was later the cinema hall and is now the theater of the comedy on the old town market .

The building was badly damaged during the Second World War and was rebuilt based on its baroque condition. Today the Sander furniture store, founded in 1857, is located in the southern part of the building ( Gördelingerstraße 6–7) .

movie theater

Under the name Regina movie theater opened in 1949 in the northern part of the building Gördelingerstraße 7, the cinema , with about 500 seats, its doors. After the renaming in 1974, the cinema was then known as Die Lupe , usually just called "Lupe", and changed its concept fundamentally. For example, monthly programs were printed, films were shown in their original version and changed more frequently and more quickly, and different films were shown on the same day at different times.

However, all of this did not help it hold its own profitably against the growing influence of television. At the end of April 2003, Die Lupe was closed after 54 years of operation. The last film shown was Harold and Maude . There was live music from parts of the jazz canteen and The Twang .

theatre

Just three months after the closure of Die Lupe , on July 1, 2003, under the direction of the architect Andreas Roemeth, work began on converting the hall and foyer from a cinema to a theater. After three months of renovation , the comedy on the Altstadtmarkt opened on October 2, 2003 under the direction of theater director Florian Battermann with the premiere of the French comedy Dinner for Spinners by Francis Veber .

As part of the ten-year existence of the comedy on the Altstadtmarkt in autumn 2013 and on the occasion of the 60th stage anniversary of Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap , the ensemble of the comedy on the Altstadtmarkt was invited to the traditional St. Martin's Theater in London to attend the British and specially from Germany Audience to play the German version of this piece.

In summer 2015, the entire stage area was renovated again under the direction of the architect Andreas Roemeth and in cooperation with the furniture store Sander . The entire stage including the substructure was removed and replaced by a modern steel structure with a theater floor. In the course of this, three trucks were added to the stage, which can be used to hang spotlights and curtains. The entire project had an investment volume of 100,000 euros.

Pieces

The comedy mainly produces boulevard comedies on the Altstadtmarkt , as well as crime plays ( Die Mausefalle , Jack the Ripper , Der Hund von Baskerville , Der Seelenbrecher ) and children's plays at Christmas time ( My friend Wickie , The Sorcerer's Apprentice saves Santa Claus , Michel from Lönneberga , Meister Eder and his Pumuckl , Nils Holgersson ). The viewers don't just get to see their own productions. A wide variety of artists are guests throughout the season with music performances, magic shows and ventriloquist shows (such as Zauber der Travestie , Thimon von Berlepsch - the magician , Jörn Brede with the Heinz Erhardt evening and Benjamin Tomkins as the puppet whisperer ).

Like many private theaters, the comedy on the Altstadtmarkt has no permanent ensemble. However, many of the actors appeared in several productions, including Nicole Belstler-Boettcher , Alexandra Kamp , Christiane Rücker , Simone Ritscher , Michaela Schaffrath , Tanja Schumann , Joanna Semmelrogge , Jessica Stockmann , Franziska Traub , Jasmin Wagner , Tanja Wenzel , Hans- Jürgen Bäumler , Harald Dietl , Gernot Endemann , Ulli Kinalzik , Frank-Thomas Mende , Kalle Pohl , Lutz Reichert , Max Schautzer , Dustin Semmelrogge , Karsten Speck and Carsten Spengemann .

Since February 2005 the comedy on the Altstadtmarkt has been supported by the Comedy Friends Braunschweig eV association. Together with its members, the club has set itself the goal of promoting the entertainment of the comedy on the old town market in Braunschweig and, through membership fees and donations, to help finance acquisitions of the comedy.

Others

In 2014, the writer Mara Laue brought out the Braunschweig crime thriller Brockstein's Last Curtain , in which the comedy on the old town market served as the setting for a crime.
