origin

His parents were Georg Wilhelm Swentzo von Puttkamer (born March 11, 1782; † September 2, 1849) and his wife Johanna Charlotte, born von Zitzewitz (born January 29, 1784; † January 28, 1859). His father was the master of Jassen and Chosnitz . His brothers Alwin (1811–1889) and Heinrich von Puttkamer (1818–1886) also became Prussian generals.

Career

He came to Potsdam as a cadet in 1818 and to the Berlin Cadet House in 1821 . From there he came to the 3rd Infantry Regiment on April 8, 1825 as a porter ensign. On May 13, 1826, he was released as a second lieutenant on January 5, 1829. But on March 15, 1830, he was reinstated as a porter ensign in the 25th Infantry Regiment, and on October 24, 1830 he was promoted again to a second lieutenant. He joined the 39th Infantry Regiment on October 25, 1832, and was appointed Premier Lieutenant on October 13, 1844 .

He received his departure on November 20, 1848 to change the Schleswig-Holstein army . In the First Schleswig-Holstein War he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords .

He returned on April 25, 1850 as a captain with a patent on December 10, 1849 and was initially aggregated into the 39th Infantry Regiment . On May 14, 1850, he was transferred to the 5th Jäger Battalion. On April 28, 1857, he was transferred as a major to the 2nd Landwehr Regiment, where he came to Stralsund as a commander in the 2nd Battalion . On July 13, 1858, he came to the 9th Infantry Regiment as a battalion commander. There he became lieutenant colonel on October 18, 1861 , and on September 22, 1863 he was given the character of a colonel .

The Colonel patent was granted to him on March 14, 1864 when he became commander of the 35th Infantry Regiment. During the German-Danish War he fought at the Düppeler Schanzen and received the Pour le Mérite for it on June 7, 1864 and the Austrian Order of the Iron Crown 2nd class with war decorations on August 21, 1864 . On February 6, 1866, he was then put up for disposal with the character of major general . He died on May 12, 1899 in Görlitz as a knight of the Order of St. John .

In the justification of his Pour le Mérite it says: Colonel von Puttkamer and his regiment were mainly involved in the storm and in the further battle, since as the left wing column of the brigade he was initially in the enemy reserves, and the same - led by General du Plat - threw back twice and his troops - a platoon of the 12th Company, 25th Regiment - were the first in the bridgehead.
