The Kontron S & T AG is one of the world's largest manufacturers of embedded computer technology and member of the Intel Communications Alliance. Kontron S&T supplies OEMs , system integrators and application providers in a wide variety of market segments: data and telecommunications, automation, mobile computing, medical technology, aerospace, measurement and control technology and military technology. Kontron S&T develops, produces and sells worldwide.

In 2017, Kontron was fully taken over by Austrian competitor S&T , after it had already acquired a 30 percent stake in Kontron in October 2016. The purchase was largely financed by the Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn , which acquired a capital increase of almost 30 percent in S&T AG.

Kontron was founded in 1959 by Branco Weiss as a service for scientific equipment in Zurich. a. Ultrasound measuring devices for obstetrics and devices for determining blood groups. In 1974 Weiss sold the company to Hoffmann-La Roche , which in 1989 sold the company to the Munich car manufacturer BMW , who used it to develop control, hardware and software for the x86 processor technology.

Hoffmann-La Roche AG spun off Kontron Medizintechnik AG (founded in 1980 in Eching as Kontron Leiterplatten GmbH) from the acquired Kontron AG and in 1984 transferred it to the subsidiary founded as Kontron Instruments AG in 1971 in Neufahrn near Freising , which is based in Zurich in 1988 , then moved to Schlieren and Rotkreuz . Because operations there ceased in 1994 and the company was to be transferred to Kontron Immobilien AG in Dübendorf , employees founded ECR AG as a management buy-out from Roche Diagnostics . In 2017, this company merged with exceet electronics GmbH, which was founded as Mikrap AG in 1978, and since then, as a subsidiary, Kontron Electronics GmbH , Großbettlingen , together with Kontron Austria GmbH , Engerwitzdorf , has been responsible for the medical technology division of S&T AG.

In 2000, the now independent Kontron Embedded Computers AG was launched on the Neuer Markt .

On September 1, 2000, Kontron bought the industrial computer manufacturer PEP Modular Computers, Kaufbeuren. In 2002 the leading providers in the field of embedded computer technology, Kontron AG and JUMPtec AG, decided to merge. Approval for this was given on June 19, 2002 at the JUMPtec general meeting and on July 3, 2002 by the Kontron general meeting of the respective shareholders. In September 2009 Kontron Compact Computer AG took over the majority of DIGITAL-LOGIC AG in Luterbach (Switzerland) from company founder Felix Kunz, a manufacturer of embedded PCs and computer systems. This plant was closed three years later.

As announced on May 20, 2010, Kontron, through its US subsidiary, has taken over 100% of the US AP Labs Group, based in San Diego, California. The acquired company is one of the leading systems integrators in the defense and aerospace sectors, developing highly complex and robust computer systems and specialized applications.

On July 24, 2013, Kontron announced the closure of the Eching, Roding and Kaufbeuren locations until mid-2014. The head office was moved to Augsburg.

In February 2017 it was announced that S&T would take over Kontron.
